Oh No, Not Again

.
April 2011 Flood 1

The Mississippi is within a hair's breadth of flood again. Most of the world has heard about the tornado that ripped across the northern suburbs Friday night and smashed up the airport (and thanks to the several readers who sent emails asking if we were okay. We are.) But it has also rained hard for days and days. Flash flood warnings are common. This is the street under the Arch by the river. You can't see a boundary between the land and water. They are about level with one another. A crest of five feet above flood stage is predicted late this week. We'll see.

We're doing a human sized gerbil wheel today on Downtown St. Louis 365.

People always comment on California being earthquake country and how frightening it must be to live here. But living with annual flooding and tornadoes? That really freaks me out.

An impressive and almost frightening image: the river is so huge and the water so level with the road!

Boy, I didn't hear about it, away in my bliss in the PNW... Looks bad, like VP said, very impressive.

Is there a perfect place to live? Seems like all parts of the country are tormented.

Summer 2008....hubby had a symposium in StL. We walked to the arch every nite and marveled at how high the water was each nights visit. last night--water was over the lowest of the three sets of stairs at the arch.

Daughter is sophomore at SIUe and was scared this past week for all the rain/thunder/tornado warnings and actual touchdowns so close to campus. She is safe and glad to know you are too.

Will be down that a way the first weekend in May.. will try to get to the arch to see for myself how bad it gets.
