A Cemetery With A View

.
Menton Cemetery 2

Today's post is going up late. I thought I got over jet lag quickly but apparently not so: I literally fell asleep sitting up last evening while preparing it. Then I was awake half the night. The price of long distance travel.

These photos are from the old town of Menton. Most places reserve hilltops with sweeping views for  expensive homes and hotels. Menton put the cemetery there. The graves include lots of foreigners, people with tuberculosis who thought the ideal climate would help (it didn't). The inventor of rugby. William Ellis, lies there. It looks like the high rent district of the afterlife.

Your first photo is great. I'm sure there are a few developers out there that would like to buy this land and build something very expensive at the grave yard.

Hurry and get back to your well-rested self again; but, I must add you have generated little sympathy from me after knowing what a terrific trip you had! I like the inscription on the cross!

All three beautiful Bob, the spectacular view in the first, the rusty iron work and reflections against the soft pink in the second and the emotion in the third, well done indeed!

My favorite is the middle photo, the iron grate with roses. Beautiful contrast.

I am enjoying your trip photos. Take as long as you need to recover form jet lag.

That top photo is just stupendous. The view over the sea and the mountains, it doesn't get much better than that. If you wanted people to visit your grave regularly you wouldn't want to be burried anywhere else !

you had gorgeous sunlight in the cemetery...the skies wept the day we climbed to that history rich place.

What a view, even in death they're in paradise (well I guess that could literally taken too!). The black and white is fantastic!

Oh so beautiful shots, Bob. It's very normal in France for the cemeteries to be above the town or village. Gorbio is the same, ditto Roqbrune, indeed everywhere I know. The dead looking down and keeping an eye on the living.

Above this cemetery is another (not sure if I pointed it out or not) - there you find most of the war graves and people who died later than those in this one.

Fabulous fabulous photos. I sound like a stuck record when I talk about your photography...

I like them all but the 'Cemetery with a view' shot is fabulous! I've never been there and I don't remember seeing this perspective before.
