Okay, this was a tough one. My responsibility since I picked it. It's a concept that is hard to reduce to a single image. I looked through years of archives and decided to use this since it expresses the virtue of compassion. It is one of the most important virtues (just ask Jesus or the Buddha), but one often sadly lacking in this world. The lettering is on the side of an improv club here in town.

Not St. Louis but meaningful to me. This picture was taken some years ago on Miyajima Island, Japan. If I understood correctly, the whole island is both a Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine. We found this on a path through the woods. The little animals give it an asleep in a manger feel.

An old photo from a local flea market showing wood made for producing music--or at least it was. As a failed violinist (good ear, bad dexterity), I am certain the beat-up violin will never again make a sound other than thunk. The electric guitar looks like it has a better chance. Musical instruments must be one of the oldest uses of wood.

The July theme is a tough one and maybe your admins set the bar a bit high. How do you depict something you can see through? I settled on this. It's not St. Louis but I like it. The location is at the Whitney Museum in New York, in a gallery overlooking the Hudson River at sunset.

It's quo vadis day at City Daily Photo. This is the interchange in downtown St. Louis between a couple of major highways and a bridge from Missouri to Illinois. It was taken from a nearby office building overlooking the scene.
There is no more iconic shadow in my city. This was taken from the observation deck on top of the Arch, 630 feet / 192 meters above the ground, and therefore even farther from the Mississippi River. The horizontal bands in the center foreground are a series of large staircases leading from the Arch grounds to the street below, and it's usually farther still to the water (although the river level looks high to me in this one).
And remember, the June theme is the road.
Today City Daily Photo members explore the many ways to be off by yourself. When I took this photo I was standing alone on the Illinois side of Eads Bridge, looking over the Mississippi back to St. Louis. No lights were visible downtown or on the passing barge. It felt like every living soul but me had vanished, and it scared me.

If you are a photography junkie like me it's hard to select a single picture out of a year's work. I considered some that reflected the tumult and anxiety of 2021. In the end, I decided on something peaceful and beautiful, hoping it might be therapeutic. This is Ruby Beach on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, photographed in September.

People who seriously try to predict the future are almost always wrong. That being said, I don't see much reason for optimism. The scale of risk is greater and greater, and humanity isn't getting a lot nicer. This photo has two layers but is not a composite. The top is a crystal ball I keep on my desk designed by one of my favorite artists, Jenny Holzer. The words are engraved on the bottom. Beneath it is a Chinese ten yuan note with its image of Mao. Read it as you will.

Mess can be a sign of disorder and decay, but, if assembled well, can also convey joy and a free spirit. And no one would ever try to steal this car. Maybe a great big mess can ward off evil.
It's the first of the month and time for City Daily Photo's monthly theme day. This time the topic is Winners. Since I've been away for a while I went back into the archives and found this picture from St. Louis' Busch Stadium. Our local heroes, the baseball Cardinals, have a tradition of winning and have captured more championships than any team except the New York Yankees. They have also won 20 of their last 22 games as they head into the playoffs.
I confess that I didn't work very hard on this theme so I dipped into some old archives. The common meaning of this phrase refers to something that is obvious but unnoticed but I took it literally. I wonder if the horse thinks she smells good,
This was a tough one and I have no one to blame but myself since it was my idea. My first thought was to buy a big heart shaped lollypop, stick it in the grass in front of the Arch, pour water on it and shoot it with a fish eye lens. Um, no lollypops in the local supermarket. Then I thought of putting a bunch of multi-colored M and Ms in a skillet and slowly turning up the heat until I realized that I'd have to clean up the mess. So I ended up with an ice pop on our patio. Rain and bacteria can deal with the residue.

The Crowe family will not be wasting any time breaking out of the confinement doldrums. This is Playa Tamarindo, on the northwest coast of Costa Rica. Our trip planned for January was canceled, of course, but we will be heading back in early July. Then a road trip to Kansas in August and a few places in central Europe in September, if they let us in. Travel is the best education, teaching us that our habits at home are not the only way to live.
