ARTICA - PRELUDE

It was Artica this weekend, The Lou's wonderful, free-form, outdoor arts event, https://www.articastl.com/ . This was its 25th anniversary and I've made a lot of images here over the years. Sunday concludes with the burning of the effigy of Our Lady of Artica, which we will get to. Finishing touches being applied here.

CITY DAILY PHOTO JULY THEME - WATER

Too little is trouble. Too much is trouble. Too hot or cold can be a problem. Yet we can't live without it. We are water based organisms on the water planet. The illustration is snow melt on the street beneath the Arch. See how wet other City Daily Photo members are at https://citydailyphoto.org/2026/06/23/july-theme-water/

CITY SUNSET

Our public radio station's photo walk ended in a secluded area at one end of the Arch park. The circular area in the center of the picture is known as the Explorers' Garden. We divided into several small groups to discuss our impressions about what we saw and the issues confronting our city. Peaceful ending.

A DOWNTOWN PHOTO WALK

We have a marvelous public radio station. In something new for them, they organized a downtown photo walk yesterday, starting in a central plaza and ending in a peaceful garden in the park north of the Arch. It was cosponsored by a local arts organization called Loutopia. Thirty or forty people came. We split into groups, talking about and recording our urban core and its history, emphasizing what unites and devides us. More to come.

BILLION BUBBLE BEVERAGE

A big sinkhole developed on the north edge of downtown about a week ago. A  break in a large water main caused extensive subsidence. It's right under a major elevated highway that has been closed since. I wanted some pictures but so many streets were closed I couldn't get close. Looking around, I saw the iconic giant bottle of a local soft drink company. It used to rotate. That's a casino in the left background.

BIG MUDDY

When my son and granddaughter were in town recently, the mandatory first stop for the kid was the ride to the top of the Arch. It is triangular in cross section, with one apex pointing inward. The little slit windows point out and down. The Illinois side in the background is very flat, less so in Missouri.

It's opening night of our opera season later today, a big deal for us. I'm sure to get a few snaps.

VIRTUAL REALITY

A day out with son Andy and granddaughter Josie. First stop was the mandatory ride to the top of the Arch. Back underneath, there was a VR experience, wandering around the bustling Mississippi riverfront in 1850. Josie must have been interested enough that she didn't notice that her hoodie was falling off.

TODAY'S DESTINATION

Son Andy and granddaughter Josie, 7, are flying in early this morning for the weekend. They will take our light rail downtown from the airport, meeting us for breakfast at a locally famous hash and chili parlor. Then it's up to the top of the Arch for all of us. The afternoon plan is the zoo, and we have an exceptional one.

WHY NOT START THE YEAR WITH THE ARCH?

No new material so I went out driving under leaden skies. Terrible light, iffy images, but I needed something and the Arch is always available. I worked in downtown St. Louis for 47 years and have been retired more than 4. The pandemic hit downtown hard. Over the last 4 or 5 years, it has become more and more desolate, although there are a couple of big redevelopment projects on the boards. Hope they work.

VISION OF ST. LOUIS

Another from Paint Louis. Besides the beautiful, evocative portrait, the background is of particular interest to me. The view is looking west toward the Arch and downtown from the Illinois side of the river. However, it isn’t today’s downtown, but from decades past, when the Arch was newer and I went to work there 51 years ago. Modern buildings are absent and the one by the left leg was razed long ago. Was the artist aware of this? If so, why was this picture used?

THAT’S WHAT WE GOT

A view into downtown from the west. taken from the Union Station Ferris wheel. I’m low on material and STL is back in the oven. Another mid-size Midwest city. You can see the big wicket right of center.

A TINTYPE

I needed a bit of filler  before a major photo event later today (the circus is in town). A year ago I learned about a $1 iPhone camera app called TinType. It produces images reminiscent of 19th Century low resolution snaps with striking effect. I go out and shoot with it once in a while. You can just see the Arch in the haze.

CITY DAILY PHOTO JUNE THEME - SHADOWS

Maybe the most famous shadow in St. Louis, but one that is rarely seen in its entirety. The view, of course, is looking down from the little windows in the top of the Arch.

THURSDAY ARCH SERIES

Yesterday we looked down into the baseball stadium from a high rise’s rooftop restaurant. Turning left, we face east toward the Arch, Mississippi River and Illinois. The semicircle in the foreground is the entrance to the underground museum and the trams that ride up the legs to the top.

RETURN OF THE THURSDAY ARCH SERIES

I used to post a picture of the Gateway Arch most Thursdays. It was easier when I worked downtown and it was a short walk away. Over time, though, it got harder to find something new to see in a 193 m / 630 ft stainless steel wicket, so the series withered. However, one of our most historically and architecturally significant buildings, which we call the Old Courthouse, just reopened after several years of restoration. Mrs. C and I went down to check it out and found this view through the east portico.

ABOVE THE FRAY

Turn around from the parade route and look up. The locomotives of a Union Pacific freight train are about to cross the Mississippi, passing just in front of the Arch. Then there is a billboard promoting St. Louis Public Schools. A bit sad that they need one.

UM, KIND OF LIGHT ON MATERIAL

So why not post a favorite Arch picture? Need to  get back out on the street.

THESE LITTLE TOWN BLUES

Granddaughter Ellie wanted to go to the top of the Arch last weekend so I had to take the usual picture. This isn’t all of downtown St. Louis but it’s the better part of it. I spent my whole working career, 47 years, here. It’s not doing well post-Covid but there are rays of hope. But I’ll be far away later today. Homeward bound.

IN CASE YOU NEED DIRECTIONS

If you were standing there and simply turned to your left you would figure it out. Still, it’s a friendly gesture. I’m impressed by how well the sign painter got the dimensions of the Arch. It is a catenary curve, exactly as wide as it is tall. It sure doesn’t look like that, though, unless you are facing it straight on.
