NYC - REVIEW AND PREVIEW

The family arrives in New York this afternoon and Ellie is pumped. This is a picture I took two years ago at the observation floor of The Summit, one of  the city’s newer mega-tall towers, this one next to Grand Central Station. The special thing is that the walls, floors and ceilings are all mirrored.  You have to wear special booties over your shoes so you don’t scratch the floor. We are booked for a visit on Monday.

THE VANISHING KID

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, or in front of the wall, or on the side wall, all precisely positioned. The right side of this image is a mirror set closer to the viewer than the wall on the left. There is a small ladder behind the front-facing mirror for Ellie to hang from, dangling just a bit of her body in direct view.

HTRIM MEHYAM DNA YRETSYM

There is a surprise around every corner at the City Museum. Mirrors may distort your sense of space, stairways seem to go nowhere and phantom photographers lurk in corners.

SELF PORTRAIT IN THE WINDOW OF A VACANT STOREFRONT

Cherokee Street. Mirrored glass. I don't know why you would want that, concealing what might lie within.

CITY DAILY PHOTO MARCH THEME DAY - MIRRORS

Hall of mirrors, Union Station, St. Louis. I kept going around in circles. The family had no trouble finding their way through.

The Mirror Of Nice

The Mirror of Nice 2

It's late Saturday afternoon as I write this from our hotel room in Aix-en-Provence. The subject is officially called the Mirror of Water. It's in a park strip by the west end of the Old City in Nice. There is perhaps an inch of water on a large stone platform. From time to time water jets bounce up in interesting patterns. The water outlets may also blow up billows of cloud, like here at sunset. Children love it. It makes for special photos at this time of day.

Tourist tip: don't try to drive in the city proper of Nice back from the sea. Pay through the nose and stay near the Mediterranean where most of the attractions are. Otherwise, take a taxi. I have driven in many old, cramped cities in Europe but never one as confusing and difficult as Nice. Even with a portable navigation system, we constantly made wrong turns. We are glad to be in someplace smaller.

Who's The Fairest Of Them All?

.
Gypsy Caravan 2012-05-28 34

The mirror isn't on the wall but it will do. This woman might be with her daughter or granddaughter. Will they find anything at the flea market to make them more beautiful?

One last photo from the Gypsy Caravan tomorrow and then onward. The destination, in some people's minds, is the Lyon of 1518.
