CITY DAILY PHOTO JUNE THEME DAY - THE ROAD

It's quo vadis day at City Daily Photo. This is the interchange in downtown St. Louis between a couple of major highways and a bridge from Missouri to Illinois. It was taken from a nearby office building overlooking the scene.

CITY DAILY PHOTO JUNE THEME DAY - WHEN I CAN TRAVEL AGAIN

The Crowe family will not be wasting any time breaking out of the confinement doldrums. This is Playa Tamarindo, on the northwest coast of Costa Rica. Our trip planned for January was canceled, of course, but we will be heading back in early July. Then a road trip to Kansas in August and a few places in central Europe in September, if they let us in. Travel is the best education, teaching us that our habits at home are not the only way to live.

CITY DAILY PHOTO JUNE THEME DAY - PINK

Your city may have a monumental statue of a politician or general, the figure of Liberty or a battling bull and bear. We have Erwin Wurm's Big Suit in Citygarden. I find it ambiguous, subject to many interpretations. Many years ago, though, I had a pink seersucker suit. No idea what got into me.

It's going to be crazed around here this weekend. The baseball Cardinals' arch-rivals, the Chicago Cubs, are in town. That always draws thousands of out of town fans. The third game of the Stanley Cup finals is Saturday night, with our Blues and the Boston Bruins tied at one game each. Is it coincidental about Cubs and Bruins at the same time or is there deeper mystical significance? I think the authorities should just turn Market Street into a river of beer and the rest of us should stay far away.

City Daily Photo June Theme Day: Nature

Mt. Everest

I'm mostly an urban street photographer. A trip into the archives was required to come up with something for this theme day.

This may be the single photo I'm most proud of. It was certainly the most difficult - Mt. Everest on a rare clear day. Long way to go for starters. We were travelling in Tibet with a small group, accompanied by English and Tibetan guides. There was a night at base camp, accessible by a very rough road. The shot was taken at 17,200 feet / 5,242 meters. I had pretty bad altitude sickness. Two men in the group had to grab me under the arms and pull me up the last little hill to the overlook. It was worth every effort.

Maybe there is something to the fact that Ansel Adams and I share a birthday. (Well, Kurt Cobain, too.) Okay, that's an exaggeration. Other than this shot not much has rubbed off.

CDP Theme Day: Stylish

Easth Day 2015-04-26 6

It's the first of the month, theme day on the City Daily Photo calendar. This month the topic is "stylish." That, thank heavens, rules out selfies on this blog.

Close call between these two recent pictures. The first was at Earth Day, the second at the People's Joy Parade. Fortunately for the ladies in the top photo it was a beautiful day. Imagine the outfit on the left in the rain. The one on the right could be a pretty good lightning rod. And as for the one below, well, puuuurrrrrr

Check out styles worldwide on other CDP members' blogs here.

CDPB Monthly Theme Day: Feet

.
La mort de Barbie.

I couldn't just post a picture of feet. The subject didn't appeal to me. Feet... feet... what about feet? What's different? Well, feet stick out of the bottom of sheets in the morgue with a name tag tied to one of them. Who deserves to die? Barbie. We wouldn't buy our daughter a Barbie when she was small. Then a babysitter gave her one out of pity, I suppose. There's no winning but there is revenge.

Feet are stomping all across the City Daily Photoblog confederation. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

CDPB Monthly Theme Day: Corner/Neighborhood Store

What does a neighborhood market mean to you? Perhaps a place that knows what you like, has a great selection, competitive prices and calls you by name. That, my friends, adds up to one special shop for me, amazon.com. I want it, they probably got it, and at a good discount, too. Salman Rushdie's new novel was published last week? It was in my office 48 hours later, shipping gratis (because they like me so much). Looking for that obscure recording by Annie Gosfield or Amy X. Neuburg? Just enter it in the search field. It's so comforting that when I log in it says, Hello, Bob. We have recommendations for you, unfailingly leading to something of interest.

Readers of this blog who would like to support its work are invited to visit my wish list, above, and send me something nice. Just to encourage future efforts, you know? Click on the picture to enlarge it and see the details.
