CITY DAILY PHOTO MARCH THEME - COMFORT FOOD

This will be meaningful only to people who live in certain American cities. White Castle is the original fast food restaurant, founded in 1921. It is known for its tiny square hamburgers, about 2.5 inches / 6 or 7 cm on a side, often referred to as sliders - you could almost slide it down your throat. They are cooked on a griddle with water and referred to as steam grilled, then served with a bit of chopped onion and dill pickle. Nothing like it.

There are only 377 of them in the US, less than one-tenth the number of McDonald's, concentrated in the Midwest, upper South and the NY-NJ metro area. There was one in the neighborhood in Queens, New York, where I grew up, and I became hooked. There are several in St. Louis. It's where I go when I need some soothing.

Today City Daily Photo members explore the many ways to be off by yourself. When I took this photo I was standing alone on the Illinois side of Eads Bridge, looking over the Mississippi back to St. Louis. No lights were visible downtown or on the passing barge. It felt like every living soul but me had vanished, and it scared me.

Hall of mirrors, Union Station, St. Louis. I kept going around in circles. The family had no trouble finding their way through.

CITY DAILY PHOTO MARCH THEME DAY - MUNICIPAL BUILDING

St. Louis City Hall was was completed in 1898. The architecture is said to be inspired by Paris' Hôtel de Ville. If you look at pictures of the latter you can see a resemblance, although the one in Paris is quite a bit bigger and ours is more colorful. It could use a restoration - if you look closely you can see window air conditioners - but this is not a city with money to spare. Still, it is an eye-catching downtown landmark.

WHAT I'M DOING THESE DAYS THAT I DON'T USUALLY DO: cook. We can't have our recovering patient standing over the stove. I've gone slack on this over the years. My wife and both our children are excellent cooks. My son in law is a professional chef. I leave it to them and go edit pictures. It's not likely I'll poison us, though.

TOMORROW: one more Mardi Gras street portrait for now and then STL DPB is on the road again. Virginia, can you make this page sing Willie Nelson's On the Road Again? This is more-or-less a business trip with some fun attached. With luck, you will find out what on Tuesday.
