In the note accompanying my post of January 3, I was whining about chore of having to go back to the Arch over and over, trying somehow to make fresh images, avoiding cheesy postcard shots. An anonymous commenter said that some people like the Arch photos, cheesy or not, and please go make more. So I went out last weekend and made a warehouse full of cheese. I'm talking about HDR pictures. Sometimes they can be beautiful and subtle but, more often, they tend toward visual hyperbole. Not that that's necessarily bad. Last weekend I took a bunch of new high resolution HDR pictures of my favorite monument. Cheesy? Up to you.
WHAT I DID FOR THE SAKE OF COMPARISON: today's companion post on Gateway, my all-Arch, all the time blog, is a black and white version of this same picture. I think they have a very different feel. What do you think?
TOMORROW: enough of the St. Louis Art Museum for now. Let's go shopping at United Colors of Brentwood Square.

Cheese is one of my favorite foods. I say bring it on.
superbe les deux versions, avec une petite préférence pour la version couleur

This is surely a wonderful shot. Love so see the arch in so many different ways. I'v seen the origional and I'd say the image looks better.
I like this photo, it has a surreal look to it.
Far be it for me to back away from cheesey shots. This one is great and far better than postcard fodder.
What a breathtaking shot
Behold the power of cheese. What's not to like?
I have five major food groups:
chocolate
cheese
bread
wine
butter
In that order.
My French childhood scarred me for life.
Stunning photograph. I had to Google HDR and now have the concept, that's all tho. Most impressive, Bob.
but Bob, it's tasty cheese. bring it on!
See! I was totally right... some of us like the cheese. I wouldn't call it cheese though I'd call it totally cool. Reasoning behind my previous anonymous comment that those of us who grew up in St. Louis love the arch and it's interesting how many "looks" you get week after week of shooting the darn thing. They are always fresh and different regardless if they end up having that post card effect. Keep em comin!
Oh wow! Another fabulous photo! I'm definitely taking you the USAF Memorial when you're here in March. I can't imagine what fabulous images you'll generate of that. (Actually, I've been making a list of places to show you, based on comments you've left on my blog.)
