A Slow Run Through the Woods

Sculpture is scattered throughout the Missouri Botanical Garden. This caught my eye on my last visit. The figures are lifesize and perfectly modeled but I find them disconcerting. The girls' expressions are serious. The one on the right looks a little anxious. It makes me think they are running away from something but run as hard as they can, they never move forward, never escape this bit of woods.

How do you react?

incroyable ces statues, on dirait des fantômes qui courent dans les bois. Magnifique

These statues incredible, it looks like ghosts who are in the woods. Magnificent

I think like Olivier that they look like ghosts. What is the name of the statues? They are very thin but i find them very graceful.

Is there another sculpture looming in the background? Maybe that's their constant pursuer. Anywho, love the autumn color, glowy backlight, and surreal content.

When I enlarged the photo I could see what you mean by the facial expressions, BUT I love the folds and flair of the skirts, the knee caps, legs in motion and the fingers and toes. Good art!

I wonder when they were done. In today's day and age I think we tend to think they are being pursued by someone or something but if they were done in the 50s or 60s I am wondering if maybe they were running to get home for dinner or late for something. Our minds are trained nowadays to think the worse I think.

How interesting! Love the color of the statues against the autumn backdrop.

Disturbing, like some nightmares when I have to run and I stay steady.

These are very lifelike sculptures, I thought at first this was a picture of real children!

Very interesting sculptures.

Ghostlike indeed. Very nice sculptures. Poor girls will never be able to stop running and will forever be scared.

Cool pic..it reminds me of some fairy tale where the children are running away from the evil witch when suddenly with a stroke of the wand, the children are turned into stone..

This reminds me of growing up, running with my older sister - any of them (I'm the youngest), and trying very hard to keep up, and wanting desperately to pass her and win the race. I imagine my face looked just as focused as I ran, while my sister's might have been as determined to stay ahead.
