There is more of a difference between yesterday's picture and today's than landscape and portrait. Both are HDRs, shot in color and converted to black and white. I've been going back and forth about whether I prefer Photoshop Merge To HDR Pro or Photomatix for HDR processing. Yesterday's was Photoshop. It keeps the final image pretty simple while bringing in a wide range of tonal values. This one is Photomatix. Color photos made with this application can be lurid and overblown, IMHO. The B&Ws still don't look natural but can have a lot of dramatic pop.

I must say that I prefer the second one but if you asked me why I don't know. Perhaps the more subtle grey's in the second one against the more contrast in the first one that did it for me.
Not a tech here, but I like this take on b/w. It's a fun look.
This one does have some pop but, I know what you mean about the color ones. I've seen some that do not look natural at all. I have not experimented with HDR yet though I do like some of the results I see.
I like this one too Bob.. I sometimes use a tiny bit of HDR, but usually only I'm trying to sharpen the image up a bit.

They are both lovely, otherworldly images. I don't have a preference and, since I don't play with HDR, I also have no advice to give.
I dislike anything HDR.
