Frank Stella Does Not Belong To The Mickey Mouse Club

St Louis Art Museum 2015-01-01 3

On the wall beside the Donald Judd work Madeleine examined in yesterday's post, our art museum displays a painting by one of my favorite contemporary artists, Frank Stella. This is an example of the striking style from his earlier career, sometimes known as the protractor series

Every time I walk past this I think of iconic Mickey Mouse ears. It draws me back to the days of the Mickey Mouse Club. Stella is 78, a bit old for that, but still that shape, the black outline. It makes me wonder.

Great work. I have seen Stella paintings many times, but this is the best I can remember.
