Green Day

St. Patrick's Parade 1

It's that time of year again. The city's St. Patrick's Day parade was held yesterday. It was cold and damp but, as usual, many participants and spectators had their radiators well-filled with antifreeze. Saints alive, they sure weren't shy.

I got as many good pictures as a Japanese trawler gets tuna. Lots more to come. Don't know if I'll make the Ancient Order of Hibernians parade today, though. It's supposed to snow all morning into early afternoon and I'm a cold weenie. We'll see.

By the way, today, March 17, marks an anniversary worth noting. 40 years ago tonight, a pair of young men and a pair of young women went into a packed bar for a St. Patrick's Day drink. One of the boys, shall we say, hit on one of the girls, leaving the other two awkwardly staring at one another.

"Uh, hi," the more shy boy said, "Would you um like to play pinball?"

"Sure, I guess so," the more reticent girl replied.

He talked her into meeting him at the same bar the next afternoon. After a time, she said she had to go home and clean her fish tank. He eagerly offered to help.

The young man soon asked her out on a date. She went along to hear the St. Louis Symphony perform Mahler's First, perhaps wondering what the hell she had gotten herself into.

Carolyn and I were married the following year. March 17 is an auspicious day.

Happy anniversary! Wow, the people of St.L like any excuse to drink in the streets, don't they? And you're always right there in the thick of things!

What a nice story. They say the quiet ones get the girl. It wasn't my experience, but who knows?
