YES, YOU CAN DO THAT HERE

Recreational marijuana, or cannabis if you will, is legal in many but not all U.S. states. It was authorized here in Missouri by referendum. Pot remains unlawful on the federal level but the rules are not enforced in permissive states. Shops, called dispensaries, are all over. Never dreamed I’d see a sign like this back in college days when little plastic bags were smuggled in the dorm. Strange that I have not smelled it on the street recently. Chemistry, maybe.

ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE

Recreational use of marijuana recently became legal in our fair state. Not surprisingly, since intoxication is a major theme of the event, some folks were out hawking their wares during the Mardi Gras parade. The double entendre on the billboard is cringe-worthy.

I expected the parade route to reek of the stuff but the dominant aroma was spilled beer. When I returned home I went online and found that use is only permitted in private homes and never in a public place.  It was surprising that no one was testing the limits.

I THINK THEY WANT MORE THAN BEER

I didn't smell anything distinctive in the air, though. Limited medical marijuana is permitted in Missouri. Recreational sale and use is legal just across the river in Illinois. I assume there is a fair amount of interstate smuggling.

STL DPB ON THE ROAD - O'HARE AIRPORT

Changing planes at Chicago's O'Hare airport. Saw this on our way between gates and I don't get it. Recreational marijuana is legal in  Illinois if you get it from a licensed dispensary. So if you brought it in from somewhere else you shouldn't technically be taking it out of the airport. But if you got the stuff through security in carry-on luggage at your home airport, do you really think you have to worry about it on the streets of Chicago? Or is it for people leaving Illinois? I doubt this gets a lot of use.

Lansing, Michigan, Thursday night, then up to Clare to see the family on Friday.

The Herb

An open gate in the Mississippi flood wall south of downtown. This is the graffiti-permitted stretch. You see these "free the herb" tags everywhere around the city, always with the same lettering. The tagger may be stoned but he or she is persistent.

However, I don't think it will ever be legalized in this state. We have an increasingly hard right government with a few islands of progressives scattered across. If you want it easy and legal, drive out to Colorado.

By the way, the old factory in the background is across the river in Illinois.

Rocky Mountain High

Maggie's Farm

Recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado, sold at highly regulated dispensaries. It is illegal under national law but the feds stay out of the way. A local told told us that a study of the experiment had just been completed by law enforcement agencies and social scientists. No increase in crime, no change in auto accidents, no change in health statistics and the state is making truckloads of money. Everybody's happy. This store is in Manitou Springs, adjacent to Colorado Springs.

Do you think it should be permitted in your area?

By the way, I assume the name of the store is a reference to the old Bob Dylan song.
