MAKE MONEY BUT PLEASE KEEP IT HERE

A sign put up by a local booster organization on an abandoned building near the Mississippi. It is clearly visible from an elevated highway seen at the top. They want you to start a business, make a lot of money, but then DO NOT take it to another city. It's happened. Baby, please don't go.

HOME MADE

A sign on an old commercial building, visible from a major highway. The smaller lettering in the middle reads "Start Up - Stand Out - Stay." It's like, hey, be an entrepreneur, do something great, but baby please don't go. I don't think it's motivated anyone.

WE DO?

We do!

Seen in front of the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park, which is more interesting than it sounds. I don't know who the sign is meant for. It doesn't refer to a current exhibit.

STL DPB ON THE ROAD - POLITICAL OPINION IN MARSHALL COUNTY

Placed directly opposite the exit from the Walmart where you can't possibly miss it. Keep in mind, however, that Kansas just resoundingly defeated a ballot initiative to remove a provision in the state constitution protecting a woman's right to make choices about her own body. But I wouldn't blame the sign-maker for anything. We could have done  so much worse.

MADELEINE MONDAY

The suburb where we live, Webster Groves, has a central street with many restaurants. One company has three of them, ranging from expensive fine dining to an upscale coffee shop. There is a storefront with what we think is their private function room and it had this large sign in the window. No idea what it was about but since the family calls my granddaughter Ellie we had to get a shot.

JUST GETTING BY

With trash? Probably a lot, one way or the other. Another enigmatic sign from the exhibit in Park-Like.

STL DPB ON THE ROAD - I HAVE A DREAM

It's beastly hot and humid here so I haven't been out to shoot any new local material. We'll poke around Kansas a little more, then. Another sign from the Empty Cup Cafe in Marysville, country humor with extra social sensitivity.

STL DPB ON THE ROAD - RESTAURANT MANNERS

Seen in the Empty Cup Cafe in Marysville, Kansas, where the food is good and varied. Good behavior, however, is expected of all, or else.

YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT

In 1624, the English poet John Donne wrote

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
Not that this isn't true every day of our lives but most of the time we conveniently overlook it. Now the idea slaps us in the face. Wear that mask, dammit. Do your bit to keep me alive.

AT THE END OF THE FOREST CLEARING

There's a metaphor in here somewhere, something about what is happening to us at the edge of the wilderness. This is actually a local landmark at a gas station that has been at this location for many decades. The original enormous sign was formed with neon. What you see here is a modern reproduction, sort of like the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square, Boston. The view is through the trees in the southwest corner of Forest Park.

The Amoco brand doesn't exist on gas stations any more. This one pumps BP products. I wonder how many Americans know that stands for British Petroleum.

Go Will!

I love signs! (I've got my eye on a couple of other ones in my neighborhood for upcoming posts.) This one is on a stretch of Manchester Road that I don't travel down very often; I happened to spot it on the way to see my friend Will DJing at a bar one night. I told him I'd snap it the next time I drove by... after taking some unsucessful shots of it in darkness, I left for work early one day to get it in the dawn light.

The Sweetest Thing

About four months ago, I moved from the heart (read: the most expensive part) of Saint Louis' Central West End neighborhood to the "gentrifying" (read: used to be dangerous, now is rapidly developing) neighborhood just to the south of the CWE. The house that we have moved into is more than twice the size of our old apartment, has as many or more amenities, its own yard, and is exactly the same cost to us monthly. So we have to set the burglar alarm every day; it's so worth it.

The restaurant "Sweetie Pie's at the Mangrove" has attracted me since we moved, for several reasons: one, it has a neon sign that we can tell people to look for when they're trying to follow the directions to our new house; two, I like the sign itself, for the neon ice cream cones (though several layers appear to have burned out recently), and its design in general; three, I just want to eat there (it's soul food, and supposedly quite good); four, it gives me a daily head scratcher about the origin of the "Mangrove" part (our mini-neighborhood is sometimes called just "The Grove," after the Tower Grove neighborhood further south), but no mangrove trees grow for hundreds of miles to the south of here.

Melroy's is just a bonus neon storefront about a half block down. I guess it's a tattoo parlor, though I've never looked closely. I don't think I'd want to get a tattoo there in general, especially since they've been advertising for a new tattoo artist for as long as I've been driving past it.

On a photographic note, I realize that both of these pictures should have been taken in twilight low-light (rather than no light), but earlier today I had planned to take them a bit after I (should have) left work at 7:00 PM, and didn't end up being able to do it until about 9:00 PM. Sorry. Better new pictures coming up soon, I promise.

Tomorrow: ideally, some new pix of Central West End life
