WAIT, I THOUGHT I LEFT THERE

I was driving around the South Side of the city the other day looking for anything to shoot. After rounding a corner I was confronted with Slovakian and Czech flags, countries we visited in April. Turns out they were flying over something called the American-Czech Educational Center, new to me. I may return to that but the circus opens tonight and we're taking the kid. They let you take all the pictures you want.

STARS AND STRIPES

From certain angles the flags we saw yesterday seem go on and on. It is fitting to honor those who gave their lives for all of us, although we may disagree with their commanders' intentions. What saddens and frightens me is how many of our countrymen are willing to violate what I thought the flag stood for and create a de facto dictatorship of the minority.

9/11

There is an event on Art Hill this week called Flags of Valor, https://flagsofvalorstl.com/. More than 7,000 American flags have been planted in orderly military rows, one for each  member of the armed forces who died in the line of duty since September 11, 2001. It is overwhelming and this shows only a small part. A lot of people were there on a sunny Friday afternoon.

No American who was old enough at the time can forget where they were when they heard the news. I don't.

Signs And Symbols

Sports stadiums around the world are awash in advertising. It's annoying but unavoidable. This photo was taken during the playing of the national anthem. Looks like commerce is soundly defeating patriotism. At least Fredbird, the Cardinals idiot mascot, stands alone at attention.

The flag in the corner of the top picture is that of the City of St. Louis.

Viva __________

Hispanic Festival 2013-09-07 8

There was a parade of nations at the Hispanic Festival with flags from the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego. Above, we see Panama, Mexico and just a bit of one of my favorites, Costa Rica, at the right rear. Below, my other special Latin nation, la hermosa Argentina, with its banner of cloud, sky and sun.

I couldn't resist this last one, forwarded to me from Facebook. Olivier, we have to agree to disagree. For the locals, our annual Stupid Bowl dinner will be held on February 2, 2014. Restaurant to be determined. Like-minded people are welcome to join us.
