Near The Bottom Of The Tank

Renaissance Faire 2013-06-02 27

When I'm running out of pictures there are certain things I can pull out to get a good response. Children. Dogs. Belly dancers.

Olivier will like this. The audience at this last show at the Renaissance Faire did. On to a new topic tomorrow.

Just A Color Exercise

.
Festival of Nations 29

Short of time as I write this Thursday night. Have to post something so it might as well be this.  These were taken on the day after yesterday's shots and there is a change of costume.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a travel day, flying out of town for our Labor Day long weekend. It's another undisclosed destination for now. None of you would guess where we're going except the one of you who already knows. Like they said at the beginning of Monty Python, and now for something completely different. However, the zombie remains of Hurricane Isaac are supposed to pass right over our fair city on Saturday and may inundate us, a summer's worth of rain in a day and a half. This might or might not work out.

May Your Scimitar Blade Be Dull

.
Festival of Nations 24

Actually, I had no idea which  side of a scimitar blade was the sharp one so I looked it up. It's the outside of the curve so no worries, mate. This act at the Festival of Nations was a big hit, particularly with the owners of Y chromosomes. They were fabulous, though, a combination of grace and athleticism. I wasn't crazy about the group ululation at the end but I must confess I feel like doing it myself every time if flip past the Republican Convention on TV this week.

There is a shaky hand-held video of the sword dance at the bottom. I may post some more of this tomorrow.

That's Not Nepalese

2011-10-22 Concer For Kathmandu Kids 9

Three skilled belly dancers were part of the Concert For Kathmandu Kids. Uh, this is Middle Eastern, not South Asian, isn't it? Although the last time we were in Kathmandu two years ago, our group had a farewell dinner at a restaurant that featured belly dancers (and a finale with an appearance by Yeti).

Today is the deadline for submissions for STL's big year-end photography show, SEEN 2011. I won first place last year with this one. You can see my entries for this year here. Any favorites?

Eight Out Of Ten Belly Dancers Use Colgate

.
A squad of belly dancers sent by the American Dental Association gives the crowd some instruction during the green show before the performance of Hamlet Sunday evening.

Ah, not really. I'm just in a panic trying to clear my desk and get all my equipment organized before I leave for Massachusetts and Maine on Friday. Needed a quicky post.

Gratuitous Something Else

.
Okay, guys, wake up. STL DPB has moved from gratuitous cuteness with sweet little kids to gratuitous...well, this. These ladies are are a permanent fixture at the Renaissance Faire; the renaissance of what part of the world is open to question. I don't think it's Florence.

Lots going on this weekend. U "R" Us and special someone Clare will arrive from Chicago late tonight. Tomorrow morning we're all going up to the top of the Arch! I haven't taken the ride in a couple of years. Then some museums, probably, and in the evening our annual Shakespeare in Forest Park festival. This year it's Hamlet. Oh, yeah, that's where the phrase that ended yesterday's post comes from. Act 1, Scene 3, specifically. And we'll have absolutely no problem getting around the 65 or 70,000 thousand people expected downtown for the Susan Komen race/walk for breast cancer research. I got a helicopter on call.

That's Entertainment

.
Some final shots from Shakespeare In The Park. The woman above is part of the group from Wednesday's post. The man below is Jeff the Juggler, who has been part of the green show year after year. He is very animated. If I juggled fire, I'd be animated, too.

I think that tomorrow we will go to a different venue and look at the faeries; heavy metal, scary looking, good-natured biker types; or various interesting people dressed as if they lived in 16th Century France. Got a preference?

Dancers and Drummers

.

Not only are there mini stage shows in the warm up for our Shakespeare In The Park, there are belly dancers and drummers wandering through the crowd. Ladies, I hear this is very good exercise. And theater fans, it could take your mind off that lousy bottle of wine your friend brought for the pre-play picnic. I watched and took pictures for some time. The woman on the right in the red, white and black robe looked like she never came out of a trance. It occurred to me later that she might be blind.

FOLLOW-UP ON YESTERDAY'S POST: the alert Mrs. C writes that green show "simply means the show on the lawn (green), as opposed to the stage. One of their earlier program books explained it; see this one:

TOMORROW: Thursday Arch Series.
