Oh, it's late. Here's a crummy iPhone shot of our arrival at the airport.
We do not like Las Vegas, not at all. Well, I have a morbid fascination with photographing it. We don't gamble and we think most of the shows are insipid. The city is American garish at its most extreme. So what are we doing here?
We love the desert. We will eat and sleep in the city but take day trips into the wild, open country every day. Mojave National Preserve, Death Valley, Zion National Park in Utah and Lake Mead are on the agenda. Lots of that to come. Now to bed.

I share your sentiments about Las Vegas. I haven't been in years, but honestly would love the surreal aspect of the city...Eiffel Tower, pyramids...
plenty of material for the photographer to chew on. have fun.
Wow you could go mad in an environment like this Bob, the pictures, the pictures...if not Vagas itself, more importantly the desert!! Have the very best time.
zion is beautiful. I still remember playing wiffle ball with my kids in front of the lodge. The hike up the virgin river is amazing. (better in the summer, because you have to get wet). Enjoy
That's a great idea. I miss the desert. never thought of using las Vegas as a bedroom.
I wish I could be with you, lol!!!!
And I was pretty sure of your destination...
That's the only reason I'd go to Vegas Bob.
Oh and the Neon Sign Graveyard they have there. http://www.neonmuseum.org/
I'm overdue to for visit to the desert. Have fun.
I was in Vegas two years ago for a conference. Didn't like the garishness or the gambling, but some restaurants were very good and the show we saw was excellent. Have fun out in the desert.
I've never wanted to visit Vegas, for many of the reasons you listed. However, Zion Nat'l Park and the Neon Museum are another matter! I like the plan to use LV as a place to sleep. Hmmm ...
In a few weeks, my city will be hosting Super Bowl 46, an over-the-top, overly hyped event meant primarily for the 1% among us who're also football fans. I'm determined to use the time to meet people and participate however I can, so will be docent at a contemporary art exhibit called TURF and work on the half-time show. Pictures will result.
Enjoy sleeping in Vegas, Bob!
We visited Vegas January 2010 (to see Garth Brooks- excellent show - not his typical country rock at all). While we were there it snowed the day before we headed to Red Rock Canyon (17 miles out of Vegas; BLM land). Locals flocked to the Canyon and lined the asphalt road (that runs through it) with the most amusing snow creations (eg, snowmen with tumbleweed hair). Otherwise, we leave Vegas for others.. the desert is the way to go! Enjoy.
People watching in Vegas is pretty good material for photos!
Even the airport looks tacky and gaudy, which is in keeping with the city.
At least there's all of that better stuff to go out to out in the desert....
I tend to think that what I hate is not Las Vegas, it's the desert. I don't deal well with extreme temperatures. But then all your photos are stunning.
