STL DPB IN NEW YORK - INDIAN CLOTHING IN JACKSON HEIGHTS

As mentioned earlier, Jackson Heights, Queens, has more ethnic diversity than any zip code in the United States. This is a traditional Indian clothing store, displaying very creepy mannequins of children. Note the girl's right forearm.

STL DPB ON THE ROAD - THAT ICY STARE

Another find in the Saturday market along Portobello Road. I don't know if this expression is emotionless or hostile. The hand on the left is that of the vendor, who can barely be seen in the shadows. And the old gent in the mirror is not me.

Statuesque

.
Gypsy Caravan 2012-05-28 18

I suppose this was a clothing mannequin, and a rather voluptuous one. Someone clothed it in irony, covering it in découpage images of fashionable young women and their stuff. It's very clever but I wouldn't want to live with it. Besides, the vendor at the Gypsy Caravan who offered it was asking $875. I'd rather spend the money on a lens or an airline ticket to someplace exotic.

Studio Open House Weekend: Found Along the Route 2

.
Family Of Man 1

Found in the corner of a fashion designer's studio (not Michael Drummond's). I'm drawn to bare mannequins. You can see them as soulless or as full of potential. This group feels like is must have a social connection, maybe the anticipation of a wedding party picture.

Concerto For The Right Hand

.
Maurice Ravel wrote a Piano Concerto For the Left Hand. I spotted the opposite effect during Open Studios weekend while was leaving an exhibit space on funky Cherokee Street, a strip that contains our town's (very) Little Mexico, art galleries and a socialist bakery cooperative. This impromptu sculpture was pressed into a corner. You had to play your own concert in your head.

The artists' portraits series will return tomorrow.
