Go Fly a Kite

A family Sunday afternoon on Art Hill in Forest Park, the largest urban park in the United States. Blog contributors U "R" Us and ShadowyOne (sometimes known as Thing 1 and Thing 2 or simply the kids) test the wind. Notice the nearly identical color schemes of their clothes. Must be the fashion these days (I wouldn't know). Also note the camera on ShadowyOne's left hip, ever at the ready. That's my girl.

I swear the color scheme was totally coincidental!

I like to see multiple kites on a string. We don't have that in India. The kite flying "season" here is in January during a festival called "Sankranti". The string is coated with a mixture made from paste made of rice, Fevicol (a synthetic adhesive) and ground glass. This allows two kite flyers to engage in a contest and they try to cut each others strings. There are strategies and techniques to cut the other guy's kite off.

Hyderabad - I've heard of those kite battles. Sounds like vicious competition! The multi-element kites in these pictures are not common in the U.S. but are typically Chinese. My wife and I got them for the kids when we visited that country last month.

The first picture is just perfect. The light of the afternoon and the lawn plus the intense blue and the added idyllic factor that they are flying kites produce a wonderful result.
