How can you tell if something is very small from a photograph? One way is to put something else in the picture that provides a sense of scale. This was taken in a butterfly room with much luck from a cooperative subject. City Daily Photo members around the world squint their eyes and find the tiny at https://citydailyphoto.org/category/theme-days/ .

Another from the Butterfly Vivarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The inhabitants can have a sense of drama.

STL DPB IN NEW YORK - REPOSE
I loved going to the American Museum of Natural History when I was a kid. There are lots of new things since my last visit decades ago. One is an indoor butterfly room they call the Vivarium. It’s hard to get one of them to stand still and pose but this worked. We think the circle is its rolled up proboscis.

Cammo
Back home at last. I was sitting on our front steps yesterday afternoon while Ellie was doing something we will see tomorrow. A monarch butterfly flitted by and settled in the fallen leaves. We don't get many of these in our area. If I hadn't noticed it in the air I probably would not have seen it among the browns and oranges.
CORRECTION: Mrs. C, the house lepidopterist, botanist and grammarian, looked this up and informs me that this is not a monarch butterfly. It's called a comma, oddly enough. I'd be a mess without her.
