We Watch (Part Of) The Stupid Bowl

Long-time readers of this blog know that Mrs. C and I dislike American football. It's all about gratuitous violence, brain damage, life-long disabilities, and most of all money, as crass as greed can get. (Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?) Back in the U.S., we always go out to dinner for our own private Stupid Bowl party. If the restaurant is open you get the best table and service. But we're in Costa Rica.

I thought it might be fun to go to one of the big beachfront bar-restaurants here to photograph the scene. It was interesting if unsurprising. We had never seen a Super Bowl half time show so we stayed for that. Now I don't know Lady Gaga from Lady Macbeth but it was kind of sort of mildly fun. Then we returned to our condo. The best part was the moon through the palm trees.

Surf

We ain't got no surf in the Mississippi and you sure wouldn't want to spread out your towel on the waterside mud. So if I want shots like this I have to go to Playa Tamarindo.

No Direction

For now, anyway. Photos from Playa Langosta as sunset approached. What do the Aussies say? No worries, mate. For now. For another week. And then . . .

Quite a variation in our annual routine today. It's Stupid Bowl Sunday. Normally we'd go out to dinner for our private Stupid Bowl party but we're not on our home turf. There's a sports bar here, Sharky's (my photo), that is lined with huge televisions and is promoting the game. Never gone into the lair, so to speak, for this event but my camera and I plan some anthropological research.

J'accuse

Those Same Pictures Again

We have been coming to Tamarindo, Costa Rica for some time (with great thanks to our friends who make it possible). Every year I take versions of these same pictures, over and over, from the ocean side of the condo development. Who could resist?

Go to Costa Rica, Speak French And Enjoy Life

No surprise, but we arrived back in Costa Rica yesterday afternoon. Since the  condo in Tamarindo isn't available until later today, we spent the night in Liberia, where there is an international airport serving the many tourist areas in the northwest.

We had dinner at Cafe Liberia, the number one rated restaurant on Trip Advisor. Chef-owner Sebastien Devenelle presides. He is from Reims, France. It was too difficult to start a business in France so he came to Costa Rica and fell in love (as all visitors do). Devenelle opened a restaurant in the oldest building in town, where he serves simple and simply perfect food. My review on Trip Advisor has a description of our meal.

Highly recommended if you find yourself in this part of the world.

Lone Star Attitude

Yup, deep in the heart of Texas. Go to downtown Dallas wearing bull horns and cow ears. Eat a cheeseburger. No one will notice anything amiss.

On south today. Paradise awaits.

A Timely Tee Shirt

I was sorting through tee shirts while packing last night and came across this old one. It's from the Truisms series by one of my favorite contemporary artists, Jenny Holzer. Her modus operandi is streams of aphorisms, thrown at us like water over the falls, or sometimes a single sentence that burns for long periods of time. I first encountered her work many years ago while walking down Picadilly in London and saw these words projected on the side of The Ritz Hotel: You cannot stop hunger by drawing a cake.

Obviously low on material but I won't need this shirt where we're going. (No, it's not Canada.) May or may not have a post tomorrow. Maybe I can find something Texan tonight.
