SHE’S LIKE A RAINBOW

Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. Looks like the tradition carries forward.                        

BETWEEN THE STORMS

Thunderstorms passed through the area off and on all weekend while the Michigan division of our family was here to visit. One evening Mrs. C and I watched the kids while our son and his wife went to dinner with an old friend. Another line of storms blew across, leaving this view from their Air BnB apartment when the sun returned.

I had to go way back in the archives to find this one. It was taken from a previous office where I had a good view of the Arch, probably with an early phone cam.

PRIDE

         

Pride is a tricky word and concept. It is one of the Seven Deadly SIns. According to the Book of Proverbs, pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Hamlet warns us against the proud man's contumely. (Had to look that one up. It is an out-of-use word for scorn, accent on the first syllable.)  

And yet we are proud of our and our children's accomplishments, our country (sometimes) and our worth for just being human. That was the part on display at the huge Pride Parade downtown on Sunday. It was at least as big as our other annual street buster on St. Patrick's Day. I have a ton more pictures from the event but the big Fourth of July celebrations will start to get in the way. We're watching the practice for the air show over the Mississippi from our office as I write this.

The town's favorite saint and king on his perch atop Art Hill, ordering a bit of extra color in the sky.

Sorry, though, no fire, unless you want to count the sunlight that made the rainbow. This is a detail from the fountain and cluster of sculptures known as The Meeting Of The Waters. It symbolizes the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers just north of the city. It is interesting that this was the core of a big urban renewal project in the 1920s. Of course, it scandalized the locals at the time, much like another famous STL statue, Naked Truth, had done a few years before.
