CITY DAILY PHOTO MAY THEME DAY - SHADOWS

There is no more iconic shadow in my city. This was taken from the observation deck on top of the Arch, 630 feet / 192 meters above the ground, and therefore even farther from the Mississippi River. The horizontal bands in the center foreground are a series of large staircases leading from the Arch grounds to the street below, and it's usually farther still to the water (although the river level looks high to me in this one). 

And remember, the June theme is the road.

We defined the May 1st theme as earth, the earth or just dirt. I didn't have anything local in the archives that got my attention so, as one of our colleagues says. I went out of the jurisdiction. This is on my brother and sister-in-law's farm in Marshall County, Kansas.

I bet we'll see pictures of empty parking lots and well-spaced queues today. Because I am particularly high risk, my doctor has forbidden me from entering stores. Either the family gets things for me or I fall back on the convenience of putting money in Jeff Bezos' pocket. This could be my shopping list for today.

Well, I don't have any pictures handy of something purple - it's not my color -  and I'll be damned if I'm going to post a pretty purple flower. I came up with this idea when I saw a coaster in a local restaurant called Big Sky Cafe. You can see other City Daily menbers blends of red and blue at http://cdpbthemeday.blogspot.com/

It occurs to me that I must relate to Jimi Hendrix about the way my parents related to, say, Tommy Dorsey. All things must pass.   

City Daily Photo Theme Day: Let's Eat

Hedonism simplified. Get your life in order. I suppose it's a matter of taste and priorities, but some people might ask for seconds and never make it any further. My father, who was in commercial sugar business, would have approved.

The location is Clare, Michigan's famous Cops & Doughnuts. It's heaven for those with a sweet tooth and a nightmare for endocrinologists and dentists.   

City Daily Photo Theme Day: Smell

Someone said that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. More or less the same with photography about smell. This theme didn't grab me, maybe too much of a metaphoric stretch. But if you are a CDP elder ya gotta post something. Hence, a pan of barbecue and some kind of weird lily I brought home from the supermarket. 

There's something entirely different that's good about today. If the plan works (if the plan works) I will stop working full time in exactly one year. Maybe I should get one of those counter widgets.               

CDP Theme Day: Revolution

We don't have any Ferris wheels in STL at the moment. No huge tires or gears got my attention and no insurrection in the streets like Baltimore this week. But this will do.

A motorbike with a picture of Che Guevara on the mud flap and some pointed text. I took this picture in Kathmandu in 2009. Heaven knows what the road looks like today.

Reports trickle in to us from the Mitrata Foundation in KTM. We learned yesterday that Januka, the young woman we have sponsored for years, is in her home village and safe. We wonder what conditions she is living in.

I had to dig around in the archives to find a suitable picture for City Daily Photo's monthly theme day. This is an ice sculptor at work at a festival of such things in suburban St. Charles, taken last January. He is using an electric grinder on the block.

CDPB Monthly Theme Day: Shadows

What is an x-ray besides a high-energy shadow? X-ray images are photographic negatives so the light area here is the shadow of my left hand and wedding ring. The hand is a bit messed up from rheumatoid arthritis but you have to know what to look for. All you clinicians, licensed and amateur, are welcome to state your findings.
