DRAGON, DON’T EAT THE KIDS!

A Chinese dragon threatens some children at the Red Lantern Night Market. All in fun but the girl on the right looks a bit concerned.

DRAGON, RAMPANT

So the dragon we saw yesterday was headed under the canopy of the botanical garden's amphitheater. I never dreamed that dragons were so loose-jointed. But as far as fierceness goes, they are more flash than substance.

I suppose most of us have witnessed, or at least seen pictures of, a Chinese dragon on parade. Many people hold segments on poles, creating a perfect undulating movement, peaks and valleys of slither.

Many-segmented dragons are common at Chinese events. There were three at the festival at the botanical garden last weekend, this one, another a bit smaller and a "baby dragon" carried by small children. You have to wonder whether the idea came purely from people's imaginations or whether it was, at some point, chemically enhanced.

FLYING DRAGONS

There is a show of Chinese acrobats every year at the festival. Usually they are spectacular (see about the first third of the pictures here). This year I think they sent the AA or AAA league team. (American baseball reference. Let me know if you are unfamiliar with this.)  The show didn't raise anyone's blood pressure.

Still. there were some cool visuals. This young man was playing with a couple of those large Chinese yo yos. (I've seen way better displays.) But then he attached a long paper dragon to one end of the string. Not complex but tasty eye candy.        

Dragon Dance

Sometimes photobloggers find themselves in the desert and sometimes in a lush orchard. I'm just now getting into pix from the Chinese cultural festival at the botanical garden a week ago. Red is obviously an important color. Love the hi-top Cons on the woman in the first picture. The dragon looks like it is reaching desperately for a piece of candy.
