Again, no energy to go out and shoot so pulling from the archives. It rained all day yesterday anyway. The statue is in front of the St. Louis Planetarium, and so is probably looking to the stars. Still…   

Mrs. C and I are going to the symphony this afternoon. It seems appropriate that we are hearing the Mozart Requiem.

            

J. K. IN THE DARK

The St. Louis Science Center is open for the evening on the first Friday of the month. Last night had a Harry Potter theme and a certain small person I hang around with insisted on going. The place has a wonderful planetarium with one of those special projectors. They showed what turned out to be a somewhat tedious one hour documentary about Harry, the author J. K. Rowling and the history of magic. Even Ellie got a little bored with watching Ms. Rowling cooing over artifacts.             

A GESTURE OF SUPPORT

Yesterday's post showed a statue in front of our planetarium. The blue structure is the building itself, taken from the other side and some distance away. There are often color and pattern projections on it, and I heard they were doing a blue and yellow theme this weekend. It turned out to be a yellowish sunflower, a Ukrainian national symbol, distorted a bit by the building's shape.

There is a major highway below street level on this side of the planetarium and you could only get a good view of the display by driving past. This was the clearest shot I could get.

Our huge St. Patrick's Day parade is today and I'll be downtown to shoot it. It will be really cold but my granddaughter Ellie is in it so I'll bundle up.

Giacometti At The Planetarium, Maybe

Other than Sunday night's moonrise I haven't been out shooting much.  So, I need to pick through recent inventory.  That's our planetarium (a pretty cool place). When I was driving around Forest Park looking for material, I found this sculpture, perhaps three times life size, outside the entrance. I didn't see any identifying information around it or on the web site but it sure looks like the work of Alberto Giacometti, right down to the oversized feet. Like the mission of the planetarium, the figure looks to the heavens and even seems to be stretching toward them. Appropriate, although it looks uncomfortable.

Celestial Light

The St. Louis Planetarium is 50 years old and still looks modern. The managers used to put a big red bow around the neck and spotlight it for Christmas. But times and technology change. This year it got a whiz-bang LED light projection system with changing colors and patterns. Way cool.

Those dinosaurs from yesterday's post are just off to the side of the building. You have to hunt for them.               

Other Spheres and Curves

I was going to use this shot for the December Theme Day until I had the idea for Planet Arch. Good thing I did; it was more fun. This is the Planetarium in Forest Park. The dome with the projector is under the hourglass-shaped building. This ball and ring in the foreground is just a bit of architectural decoration.

WHAT I DID LAST NIGHT: wore a tuxedo; leading to...

TOMORROW: if the pix I just sleepily downloaded late Saturday night turned out, maybe...The Penguin. If they didn't turn out then, well, I got some HDRs downtown Saturday afternoon. The moon is in some of them.
