THE FABULOUS FOX

Change of subject. Whether you knew it or not, there is such a thing as the International Photography Hall of Fame, and it happens to be located here. Besides exhibits, they do educational programs and workshops. There was one last Saturday about architectural photography, including two hours to shoot inside our totally over-the-top Fox Theatre.

It styles itself The Fabulous Fox. It opened as an enormous movie theater in 1929, closed in 1978, then rehabbed and reopened for stage shows in 1982. It has a twin in Detroit and seats about 4,400 in its present configuration. The decor is - what? - Greco-Roman-Byzantine-Hindu-Muslim madness but everybody loves its excess. Not the most common occurrence but that's what eleven years in Jesuit schools can do to you.

The International Photography Hall of Fame, which happens to be located in our fair city, holds workshops from time to time. Today I did a program on architectural photography that included two hours of shooting in St. Louis' Cathedral Basilica. There's nothing like it. The interior is covered by mosaics, more than any other building in the western hemisphere. This is a bit of the transept. I come out of a day like this stunned by how much I don't know.           

A Sure Sign Of Spring

One of my readers mentioned that the city turned on the water in Milles Fountain this week. Thanks for the heads up! Just had to go over yesterday morning to see how the light was hitting it.

I finally made it over to the International Photography Hall of Fame yesterday afternoon. Click About Us > Mission & History to learn about its migrations from Santa Barbara to Oklahoma City to St. Louis. There is a spectacular street photography show there now, reviewing history and style, with a special section on local street work. STL shooters owe it to themselves pay a visit and become a member.
