The Most Beautiful Village In France

Well, it's not like I've seem all of them but Gorbio has to be a serious competitor. Just a few hundred people in the town proper. Everyone knows everyone. The huge old tree in the center has been there for centuries. There is an informal cafe, a fine restaurant, a church and a post office. If there is a food shop I didn't see it. You just have to go 7.4 km / 4.5 miles down the mountain road to Menton but  you try driving that slalom course.

Our colleague Jilly, who does Menton Daily Photo, actually lives just down the mountain from Gorbio. She is the village's de facto photographer. Look over her blog for wonderful examples.

Luncheon In Paradise

Jimmy Buffet sang of cheeseburgers in paradise. Quelle horreur! On Thursday we had a two and a half hour, three course lunch with a bottle of Provençal rose, a few coffees, a visit from the house cat and many, many photographs. The photo on top is my starter. 

The venue was Restaurant Beausejour in the mountain hamlet of Gorbio, looking over the town of Menton, The Mediterranean and, unfortunately, the A8 motorway.  We stayed in Menton when we were last in the area two years ago. Our companion was our friend and colleague Jilly Bennett of Menton Daily Photo. One could not imagine such a pleasant afternoon in the U.S. No experience at home can compare. Nous aimons la France.

STL DPB On The Road: Gorbio, France

Oh, what a day! Our colleague Jilly Bennett of Menton Daily Photo and Monte Carlo Daily Photo served us breakfast on her terrace. Then we drove to the nearby mountain village of Gorbio (this is where the Alps meet the sea) for an exquisite, leisurely lunch and a good walk around the town. Lots of good pictures but these are all I've had time to edit. Must get to bed - she is picking us up at nine for a trip to the weekly market in Ventimiglia, Italy, which is really just down the road.
