Thursday Arch Series

.
Arch From Busch Stadium 2011-07-29 1

The view at sunset from the firm's seats at Busch Stadium, where the Cardinals play baseball. Nice light. Bloody hot evening, though.

There is a stagnant mass of hot air over the central US. On Monday it was 101 F / 38 C in St. Louis. Across the state, it was 108 F / 42 C in Kansas City. Just a bit better by today. I understand that the weather is delightful in Menton, France, where we hope to be in three weeks. Jilly, we're coming.

Still a bit to come from the artists studio open house weekend.

  1. la photo est magnifique, elle aurait pu faire parti du theme "carte postale" de lundi.
Cela donne quoi comme nombre de point, si un batteur touche l'arche ? ;o))

  2. It was 29° feeling like 35° in Paris yesterday with winter scheduled for the weekend...

This is definitely a recent favourite of mine. Absolutely. I love all these layers to look at.

  3. Aha ! You did it again! I just wish you could have sat a fraction to the left but as is, it's a bloody good shot.

Love Olivier's question : how many points does the batter score if he hits the arch? :-)))

  4. As well as the arch this is a fantastic picture, Bob. There's the reflections, the brooding sky , love the huge stadium light and the crowds in the stands and of course it wouldn't be an event without Mac Donald's and Coco-Cola, excellent!!

It really was quite a feat to get the tree down to Perth Bob, and for a while it was touch and go I think, but it survived!!

  5. I like this one. 38C sounds too warm for me.

  6. I am glad that when they built the new stadium several years ago they opened up sight lines to the Arch.

What fun to be visiting the Riviera and Jilly. We hope to do that in the next few years.

  7. There is so much of the spirit of your city integrated into this shot. Excellent.
You are in for such a delicious time. Enjoy every precious minute with the remarkable Jilly in the exquisite atmosphere of southern France.
Re your question: This is purely anecdotal but in my experience few people living in-town burn wood as their sole means of warming their homes. Most of us use fossil fuel and/or solar in conjunction with wood. (And many don't burn wood at all). Mr. Brattcat and I have three fireplaces in our home (livingroom, diningroom, bedroom...this is an old Queen Anne, circa 1880, built before central heating) and use them all, but not every day. The wood we burn is leftover from Mr. Brattcat's shop (he makes furniture). As for deforestation...yes, eventually that would be a problem, but we have wood-lot managers who help wood-lot owners choose the trees that are cut in order to preserve the health of the woodlands. We hotly dispute many issues in this state but deforestation...at least right now...is not one of them.

  8. Awesome shot. It tells so much about your city. For sure that is hot. We just had some summer days with around 30 degrees C.

  9. Great shot, Bob. I visited this park two years ago. St. Louis is fortunate to have an in-town MLB park. I love the parks in Boston (my home town), Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other downtown parks.

Following up on brattcat's comments . . . deforestation in Vermont? Bob, have you ever seen Vermont? There are more trees now than in the 1800s, and harvesting some of the trees is probably the healthiest thing to do for the health of the forest.

  10. Ah, the landmarks: Coke, McDonald's, and the Arch! I remain in awe over how many angles you can photograph this landmark from.

  11. Oh just STOP IT, rubbing it in that you will see Jilly in a few weeks. Waaaaaaaaaaa.

BTW, I'm not a baseball fan at all but I'd sit for a while if plied with cold, cold beer and good hot dogs for this view.
