.
St. Louis had a lot of German immigration in the 19th Century and they remain a large part of the population (think Anheuser-Busch). We have a modestly sized but enthusiastic Oktoberfest in the Soulard neighborhood. It's not the HofbrÀuhaus but liters of beer flowed freely and the crowd danced in heavy 2/4 time. Fun for all the brew swillers and bratwurst biters in the area. Lacking in dirndl dresses, though.
WHAT I'M BRAGGING ABOUT: The American Institute of Architects is slowly building a web site called The Shape of America, celebrating the great achievements among our nation's modern buildings. The newest addition is St. Louis' Gateway Arch. They approached me months ago about using some of my work. The Arch section just went online - you can see it here. If I counted correctly, 14 of the 19 photos, including all of the B&Ws, in the slide show and discussion are mine. GLORY! RECOGNITION! Now if someone would occasionally offer to pay me for my stuff I'd really be rolling.
TOMORROW: religion, gone to the dogs.

All 19 should have been yours but guess they had to be "fair and unbalanced"! A richly deserved honor my friend. You work so hard at what you do and your work certainly reflects that.
ReplyDeleteToday's photos have me craving a beer and a brat and it's only 7:00am for pete's sake. Those dancers look a bit heavy on their feet but look like they were having fun.
Congratulations! The photos on their site are great and it was one of the best commentaries on the Arch that I've seen. Love the Octoberfest photos.
ReplyDeleteI love the pantaloons. Absolutely fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThe arch series is one of my top favorite blogging experiences. I can't wait each week to see what new aspect you'll reveal. Conratulations are difinitely in order.
Big congrats on the selection of your shots by the AIA website!!! You have a lot of talent and "the eye" to see, and it's nice to hear it was recognized by people who know a good shot. You are right about getting paid, though. I vote for the idea that in the future when some entity is inquiring after one of your shots that you suggest a going rate of remuneration if the agency is for profit. Before hobby photographers were accessible through on-line searches oganizations needing photos would have paid for stock photos or had their own photographer/designer on staff do a shoot; so, why shouldn't you receive monetary appreciation for your work? It never hurts to ask for a little something more when only offered a by line. Your work is great. I wonder if Chuck (here in Seattle, a pro photographer for many years) would have advice for shopping your stuff around out there? When you retire from law you could have a second career in photo journalism. :-)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the selection of your photos, Strangetastes! I'm off to check them out now. Your work is terrific and you deserve recognition, kudos and big bucks.
ReplyDeleteHonest...
ReplyDeleteAnd I suppose you know this already...
Getting your links out any way you can is good.
To be selected this way is the best.
Congrats on your photographic triumph! Your arch shots are so good.
ReplyDeleteI'm off to polka now - Slavs do it better, just sayin'.
Oktoberfest Miami is one of the area's largest Oktoberfest gatherings, and it runs from now until Oct. 13. The event takes place at Fritz and Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables and features live music, dancing, German food and, of course, beer.
