Across the street from yesterday's frogs-o-mystery stands a neighborhood grocery store, long out of business. The sign remains in remarkably good condition but something is, well, slipping. The lovely building cries out for rehabilitation. The style is classic old St. Louis: brick and Germanic, with the addition of a cool turret. Wouldn't you like to have your office or studio in a space like that?
What's the situation on preservation of old buildings in your town?
I would love a turret, but in this building, I'd wait for the restoration.
ReplyDeletecette tour est très belle, j'espere qu'elle sera rénovée.
ReplyDeleteA Evry, le village est maintenant protégé, ce qui n'était pas le cas avant.
This tour is very beautiful, I hope it will be renovated.
A Evry, the village is now protected, which was not the case before.
I like these old buildings. So much "character", not the typical strip mal, or glass box. I do hope it becomes renovated. (But ditch the 7-Up sign). Our city, in the north metro, makes way for shiney new strip malls, just great. (note the sarcasm here, nothing worse than endless villages of strip malls).
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I remember discussing this with you and others. You mentioned a 28-135mm IS. I just picked up an XTI and settled with the 17-85mm zoom with IS. Deal was pretty good, and couldn't pass it up. Thanks for your help...and spending my $$$$! ;)
Here you have to get permission to open your own windows. Everything is protected.
ReplyDeleteI love these old buildings and bitch to no end when they are torn down. So far, though, I'm all talk. I've never purchased one, or rehabbed one, and although I live in a cool old neighborhood, I haven't moved to an "up and coming" neighborhood like I'd like.
ReplyDeletePartially, this is due to the fact that I have young children and want them to be able to play outside NOW, without the worry of neighborhoods that are good or bad on a block by block basis.
However, we DO frequent businesses and events in such neighborhoods as a small way to help out.
I'd love to start buying buildings and fixing them up, but the fear of financial ruin stops me.
Old buildings. Old signs. So nice that you still have them to photograph,
ReplyDeleteGreat title.
