It's not all pretty. The Arch is in a city and cities have a hard side. The gray, damp sky of an autumn afternoon is not flattering but the picture shows how the monument dominates our city center. But then there are people in the St, Louis suburbs who never see it except on television. I feel lucky that I get to see it every day.

I love Thursdays and getting to see how you will feature the Arch. I can remember being a little girl and getting excited everytime we came to St. Louis and seeing the arch and then I lived there and it became nothing, but I again get excited when I see it.
ReplyDeleteI like this shot equally with the rest.
It is an amazing piece of art.
ReplyDeleteI guess maybe you are luckier than the rest!

Wow, that's a stunning view - it looks like something extra-terrestrial from the movies!

Thank you all for your kind comments. Many people who live or work downtown don't pay attention to it - just part of the background. I never get tired of it. And yes, is is kind of alien looking. It's the closest thing I've ever seen to the monolith in 2001. It's glowering at me through my office window right now, even though it's almost sunset and snowing. And even though I'm on the 23rd floor, it's way higher than where I sit. This piece of sculpture has a lot of impact.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting rabaul.
ReplyDeleteI love the arch and it looks great against the grey sky. So cold-looking there - brrrr!!
I remember seeing it in 93 when my family when to Missouri for a Family Reunion, it is amazing.
ReplyDeleteAnd I like to see it this way, in the middle of the buildings.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very beautiful and powerful arc!Arcs always looks to me like gates to another reality! Thats why i love them so much!
ReplyDeletej'aime bien cette atmosphère. Dans cette photo, l'arche ressemble beaucoup à une porte
ReplyDeleteI like this atmosphere. In this photo, the arch is very similar to a door
I live in St. Louis, I see the Arch close-up several times a day, and I never get tired of it either!
