Filipino Veterans

.
LA 2011-11-11 12 (Filipino Vets Rally)

It's almost midnight my time and I just got home from the airport. These pictures were edited on the plane.

At one point on Sunday afternoon I was shooting around the intersection of Hollywood and Highland in LA when this parade came down the street. I asked one of the marchers what it was about. The details weren't clear but it had something to do with Filipinos who fought for the US - in World War II, I think - being denied American military veterans' benefits. But there can hard to be any of those people still alive. Maybe I missed something. Good opportunity for street portraits, if nothing else.

Hooray For Hollywood

.
LA 2011-11-11 8

Some snaps around the tourist heart of Hollywood. The middle picture is Hollywood High School. Can you name all the people?

Short text here and probably no comments yesterday. Long meeting followed by dinner with my colleagues. 7 AM start today. I'll have some time to kill at the airport before my flight so maybe I can get caught up but there are so many more photos to edit.

I just found out that a big Caravaggio show opened Sunday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and I won't have time to go. Rats.

That's Entertainment

.
LA 2011-11-11 1

I spent yesterday afternoon driving around Los Angeles (now that's entertainment) out shooting for fun. First stop, the tourist center of Hollywood. This is everybody's favorite star on the walk of fame. Work today. I can edit pictures if the meeting is boring.

Today's Destination

.
Floodwall 2012-10-28 1

I'm in the air this morning, heading for sunny southern California. I've got a business meeting in Los Angeles all day Monday and Tuesday morning. The plane arrives at LAX at 11:30 AM today. I'll pick up a rental car and spend a happy half day shooting around the city of the angels. The weather should be perfect. Maybe I'll run into my favorite LA character, Nick Danger.

With luck, some pix should be up tomorrow.

The top photo is a new painting on the graffiti-okay part of the Mississippi River flood wall. The bottom is of Disney Hall, home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a photo I took a year and a half ago.

I love to explore Los Angeles. As the saying goes, it's an nice place - no, a great place - to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Back To Color

.
Floodwall 2012-10-28 2

Okay, yesterday's stark monochrome photo went over like the proverbial lead balloon. Let's turn back to color, and for a reason. By noon tomorrow I'll be in a much more colorful place than St. Louis. Details in Sunday morning's post.

These shots were taken a few steps from the location of yesterday's picture. That's the railroad bridge across the Mississippi I mentioned. Then I just turned around to take the other photo. Leonor K. Sullivan was a member of Congress from here a ways back. I like the name Wharf Street. It's solid, hard-working and simple. Gorgeous light.

By the way, Jarred Gastreich, the new local photoblogger I introduced on Tuesday, had me on his blog on Friday. Click here. We're getting him into CDP.

Steel Sinews

Trestles Near The River

This pictures were taken a short distance away from yesterday's Arch shots. The trestle on the right to low center goes into a tunnel between the Arch and the Mississippi. The other two come together and join a railroad bridge over the river to Illinois. The picture reminds me of some of Franz Klein's painting.

Thursday Arch Series

.
Gateway Arch 2012-10-28 1

The Arch series is back today. After five years of almost weekly posts it's been hard to find new points of view. However, I was down by the riverfront recently, shooting some of the new paintings on the flood wall, when this caught my eye. Gorgeous light, near sunset on an autumn afternoon. I prefer the top one but you may see it differently.
