The Fourth of July

Part of the inscription on the base of the Statue of Liberty says:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
I don't think we take the words so seriously these days.

Going to try to shoot the NYC fireworks tonight. It's a big deal.

  1. An iconic sight. One of our editorial cartoonists here had her in a recent toon, tapping at the prime minister's window and asking to be let in as a refugee.

    Have fun with the fireworks!

  2. No, as a country we don't take those words seriously any more. It's good to be reminded of them.

  3. Words not to be taken at face value these days, that's for sure. How sad. Gorgeous photo though, and quite fit for today. Have been thinking fondly of my American friends today. Take care. Hope you and family are well. So I visit so little,I've been busy with a photo exhibition that is starting tomorrow in Avignon (for the theater festival). Check it out on my blog :)
