City Daily Photo Theme Day: Coffee Houses And Cafes

Coffee Bar

I had to really stretch for this month's theme. Visits to coffee houses are very rare for me. No time in my crowded life for such leisurely pastimes, and the only ones close to my office and home are Starbucks. So what to do?

This is the coffee bar in my office. My staff got one of those Keurig single-cup-at-a-time coffee makers, one of the most wasteful and environmentally unfriendly products around. I don't drink coffee during the day, the people who work with me are wonderful, and so I don't make a fuss about it. Still, this makes me think back on a few wonderful cafes we've visited: Cafe de la Paix in Paris, sitting at St. Louisan Josephine Baker's table; Cafe Sacher in Vienna; even Cafe du Monde in New Orleans.

Tomorrow morning at our home, though, once again it's French roast, brewed inky black and strong enough to clear a clogged drain.

  1. I feel for you Bob. No time for a coffee break at a cafe, that is unheard of in Sweden where coffee breaks are a must at least twice a day!

  2. We have a somewhat fancier machine in our office. It even has cool "disco" lighting sometimes. Maybe I'll have to feature it this week. It's nice that your workplace offers this perk, even if you don't partake in it.

  3. I LOVE your take on the coffee house. I never acquired the taste for coffee so, I did wonder what I was going to photograph.

  4. Blimey that is fancy Bob.. but is the coffee good, that's the question! I have to confess to enjoying exploring the many cafes popping up around Perth these days, don't enjoy that Perthites have to pay so much for a coffee compared to Sydney and Melbourne! Enjoy your inky black French roast, sounds delish!

  6. Nooooo. Why didn't I think of that instead of going out in the pouring rain on Saturday?!! Oh wait, I know why. My office isn't anywhere near Versailles!

And now you have me dreaming of Sacher. Did you also visit Demel in Vienna?

  7. Nice solution to be able to participate in the coffee house theme day. I agree with you about those Keurig things. From my perspective, they should be outlawed.

  9. Love your tongue-in-cheek take on the coffee house theme! ;-)

I may spill a secret here, but in Vienna, people often only pretend to leisure their time away in coffee houses. They are great actors, let me tell you. You'd often never guess who is actually working, you know. Things like catching up on work readings, even holding meetings right there. I am guilty of all of these. And yet, even working feels special there, just don't let your coffee get cold!
