I don't know why they do it, either. It's not like gobs of people put on yellow and red and pretend to be Spanish on Columbus Day, knocking back mucha cervesa en la calle. (And how did Columbus Day become a national holiday, anyway?) No doubt some scholars have figured out how an annual tribal celebration in Boston and New York turned into this.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade was absolutely packed on a glorious spring day yesterday. (We're expecting snow this afternoon.) It made it hard to shoot and this year's pickings weren't so good. Still, there were some keepers we'll roll out over the next few days.

Columbus day is a mistery to me, and ever so slightly offensive to the people who were 'discovered'. I like the ndn joke that goes around saying: 'Native Americans discovered Columbus lost at sea'.
ReplyDeleteThis gent is great! Let the Guinness flow!
Now, that's a mustache!
ReplyDeleteHe (or she) can for sure roll out the mustache. Where are Irish there is St. Patrick's day as I once found out in the outback of Australia.
ReplyDeleteSouthern California celebrates Cinco de Mayo as if it were our own holiday...and it's not even a major holiday in Mexico...it's simply the anniversary of a battle!!! Anything for a party!!!
ReplyDeleteAlways fun!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like your parade goers are sillier than ours!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with cieldequimper.... I guess it's all in who writes the books.
ReplyDeleteI do love this guy!
Great St. Patrick's Day portrait.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Just great!
ReplyDeleteBob, it is easy. St. Patrick's Day is huge in places like New York, Boston and Chicago, where there are big numbers of Irish people (read, "voters"). And it spread from there. And, Columbus Day is big in Boston, New York and Rhode Island, where there are oodles of Italian people (read, _________ [just a little quiz to see if you were paying attention]).
ReplyDeleteThat shot was a keeper, no doubt.
ReplyDeleteHow some events make history and then get become a pretext for binge drinking in the street is a great topic for sociologic studies.
Fun shot Bob, any excuse for a drink yeh :)
