Enough Room

.
The Tom Sawyer Under Eads Bridge

With the Mississippi this low there is plenty of room for the excursion boat Tom Sawyer to pass beneath Eads Bridge. When the river is in flood the tow boats of the big barge flotillas can barely get through. When the water level is at its highest commercial traffic on the Mississippi stops.

The Eads Bridge was an engineering triumph of its day, which I believe was the 1870's.

Your mentioning of Tom Sawyer gave this photo quite a bit of historical touch.

The fact you have a distant bridge creating a dimensional feel really helping the impact of the photograph

I have also the feeling that the underside of the bridge is a sort off eiffel tower on its own. Interesting view there.

Two fine bridges in the foreground and background. Let's hope the Midwest gets some rain pretty soon, for the sake of farmers and river traffic.
