Birdman And Portland

.
Birdman

On Sunday morning our colleague Birdman picked me up at my hotel. He likes to keep his identity private, hence the editing in the top photo. I'll just say that he makes his living with words. That hint, while literally true, is utterly unhelpful. You'll just have to come meet him yourself.

We went to breakfast at the popular Blintiff's American Cafe (I wasn't expecting French). The woman at the next table was engrossed in writing her first novel. I said something about her shirt and she allowed me to take her picture. I wonder if there will be anything in the next draft about this tall older guy with a Cardinals cap wandering across Maine with a big camera.

I took a long walk around the waterfront before getting on the road to camera camp. Mainers have  always impressed me as warm, friendly people (except in the winter, when they are frozen warm friendly people). The last two pix made me realize they can have an edge to them.

  1. cela a du être une belle rencontre, j'aime bien la photo énigmatique de birdman. Et surtout la photo exterieur du bar (la 4eme, je trouve qu'elle a un cote 70's)

  2. Great one-liners in this post a bit dedicated on writing. I especially liked the T-shirt.

  3. That t-shirt invites questions. At least the shirt does not say "Careful, or you will end up in my police report."

  4. super series, bob. i know what birdman looks like and i wouldn't have recognized him from that shot.

  5. Birdman wears a black Red Sox cap? What a disappointment. I had the Bird pegged as an authentic person. A true New Englander wears only the classic colors.

As a blogger who is also protective of identity, I appreciate how you preserved his quasi-anonymity. He wasn't wearing a brown paper bag?

  6. Glad that you and the Bird had a pleasant visit together, but not surprising since you both seem very approachable.

  10. Are you sure that's not a shot of Tom Selleck Bob, that's a very Magnum PI mustache I see a hint of there haha! Have a wonderful time at your photography camp.

  12. Love her t-shirt. I have a black one that says 'Have lens, will shoot'.

  13. Bob, you certainly did me justice. Love that Voldemort bumper sticker. And so glad you got time to get back down and stroll Custom House Wharf. Lots of photo ops down along those fish aromas. hahaha

  14. I'm glad you two had such a good time. Those are great pics too. That bumper sticker would go over pretty well down here in Florida. Many people think our current governor has quite a resemblance to Voldemort in more ways than just looks!

  20. Very clever way to publish Birdman; the witness protection program is probably grateful. : ) It sounds like you had a great time. Great photos; love the "novel" t-shirt.

  24. Isn't it interesting that whilst we don't see Birdman's face we get a great sense of him in your photo. Love the t-shirt on the lady!

I so envy you the Street Photography course you are currently taking and will be glued to your website when you return. Do they suggest using a 50 mm lens?
