Laid Back

.
Tour de Grove 19

One of the races at the Tour de Grove was for recumbent cycles, three-wheeled, hand cranked machines. They are often used by people with injuries or diseases that affect the legs.. These competitors take their racing as seriously as the bicycle riders.

I'm rather amazed at the riders who are almost fully reclined. Notice that they have no support for the head and neck. How do they take that for an half hour or more?

  3. If they have head support there is danger of falling in sleep. I think that there where some tests here in Holland about that aspect of cycling in a lying position.

  4. I also do not understand how they could maintain that position of the head and neck. Hopefully there is someone at the end of the ride that is ready to give them a neck and shoulder massage.

  5. I just saw Kate's Visual St. Paul post and today she has recumbent tricycles featured as well. Rather than a race, she is showing a couple who is on a three-month cycling trip.

  7. Fantastic viewpoint in the last image Bob, but my neck is aching just from looking at above shots. I was watching a movie on TV the other evening and there was a scene set in St Louis and there in the background was the Arch, I got a little excited to see it I must admit!!

  8. I have read that recumbent bicycles are supposed to be better for the riders than traditional bicycles. But, I can't undertstand those claims. I am sticking with my trusty Trek.

  9. Bob,
Wonderful photos of these riders with so very much determination! I especially love the last one. Well how did you do that one? Oh maybe your knees aren't completely shot are they!

Thanks for these. I hope you will share with the participants!

  10. I've seen lots of recumbent bikes, but none that low with such an oblique angles. I'd need a back and neck rest.
