Get Your Kicks

.
Historic Route 66

...on Route 66. It goes through St. Louie, Joplin, Missouri, Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty (not). I don't think U.S. Route 66 officially exists any more, at least nowhere around here. It was the stuff of American lore, the main highway between Chicago and Los Angeles before the Interstate Highway system was built. I wonder if young people have even heard of it. This picture was taken near the end of the exit ramp from I 44 (which replaced Route 66 from here to Oklahoma) at 18th and Lafayette.

Downtown St. Louis 365 gets wet feet today.

  3. Well, I've certainly heard of it! We even sought out a patch or two during a road trip in New Mexico (I think). It was quite exciting to drive on the real thing. That said, I might be an oddity since my taste in music was a bit behind the times as a kid, so I'd heard the Route 66 songs multiple times.

  4. I remember taking a trip as a kid that followed Route 66. And, of course I remember the old TV show of the same name.

  5. My family and I have recently begun exploring the bits of Route 66 that are still accessible. Even my teenage son enjoys it. It's Americana that is disappearing. We've done all of Missouri except for a patch from Lebanon to Joplin. And we've done Joplin to Oklahoma City. We were hoping to do St. Louis to Chicago this summer, but gas prices might be a hinderance. There are great photo ops!

  7. I love this. Beautiful house in the background. Where did it enter Los Angeles, Bob? I lived just off Sunset Blvd for the whole of 1960 so perhaps I lived on it!
