Which point and shoot do you use? I was always a fan of my Canon A520, except for it's slowness writing to the card. I wanted to get an A590, but they stopped making them before I pulled the trigger.
So, now I'm carrying a Panasonic DMC-LZ8 around when I don't want to lug the Nikon SLR. It's the last inexpensive point and shoot to have manual controls!
