CDPB Monthly Theme Day: Shadows

.
What is an x-ray besides a high-energy shadow? X-ray images are photographic negatives so the light area here is the shadow of my left hand and wedding ring. The hand is a bit messed up from rheumatoid arthritis but you have to know what to look for. All you clinicians, licensed and amateur, are welcome to state your findings.

Today City Daily Photoblogers the world over are exploring places where the sun don't shine.

AND BY THE WAY, I made it to the opening reception of The Character Project touring photo show last night. Wow. St. Louisans, you owe it to yourselves to check this out. It's at the Regional Arts Commission, 6128 Delmar, across from the Pageant. It's only on display through Sunday - check here for opening hours. The show will be the subject of my post tomorrow. Here's a sample:

That's pretty cool. When I broke my leg I was endlessly fascinated by the x-ray results - and a little traumatized, but I got over it.
I imagine that kind of display can teach you a lot about portraiture. Character portraiture.

Bob, I love your interpretation of shadows! And I will be looking forward to your post tomorrow because that's one hell of a teaser!

Oh yes, so original for today. What a great image.

The Character Project looks just fabulous. If I lived in St. Louis, I'd be there!

I like your interpretation lots, Bob. It is fascinating to look at the hand as so many of the bones are just sitting out in no-mans land. How did you get the image: directly from the service? surely you did not scan it yourself ..

Actually, this xray looks pretty good compared to the other one I saw. Hope your rig is working for you. Have you gotten use to it ???

I'm all about the Character Project. The lady knocking down that glass of vin cracks me up!

Thank you all for your comments. A note about how this came to be:

Visitors to this blog know that I cannot follow theme day directions literally. This time, I just had a piece of luck. My hands have gotten worse since this x-ray was taken four months ago. My rheumatologist sent me to a surgeon to see if I needed any repairs. The new doctor wanted me to bring the x-rays of my hands done by my rheumatologist so I just happened to have them. They go back to the original doctor.

It was a challenge to figure out how to shoot this. First, I put the x-ray on a piece of white board and lit it from the front. Terrible results. It occurred to me that doctors use light boxes to view x-rays. How could I make one? Then it hit me. I opened a new Word document on my big monitor so I had a bright but empty screen. VoilĂ , lightbox.

The picture is of my left hand because I thought that was more interesting. My wedding ring really stands out. Sort of an understated "till death do us part" thing.

This somehow reminds me of your old handle, Strangetastes. Love it.

Great post. I suffer from a bit of arthritis as well. My dear Mother had it really bad in her hands but never complained a day about it. I work with scientists that are working around the clock for a cure.

Have a good weekend.
