CDPB Monthly Theme Day: Metal

Um, what's big and steel and St. Louis all over? Why, the world's greatest monumental sculpture and my Thursday obsession, of course. Add a short meditation on metallurgy and, ladies and gentlemen, meine damen und herren, mesdames et messieurs, we have Metal Theme Day.

WHAT'S ON FOR THE WEEKEND: Kansas City tonight and way out onto the Kansas prairie on Saturday for my wife's family's annual get together. Really nice people and beautiful area - I love to shoot it. The forecast for the party on Sunday is blazing skies, wilting corn stalks and 102 F. / 39 C.
TOMORROW: Beats me. Might be something from tonight in Kansas City. Might be something from the archives.

183 varieties of metallic oxides are slowly decomposing on City Daily Photo Blogs today. Have a look.

Well, you got it in one! The perfect photo for today's theme. And what a great photo too. Th patina, the light, that touch of sky we see, and of course the words. Super.

Great shot. I knew you wouldn't let us down. Today's theme had you written all over it! I know you are a happy man. You got to do the Arch two days in a row! I doesn't get any better than that does it.
(PS and I got to stay in my prissy French box so I'm happy as a clam too.)

Here is a quote for you:

I was not aware of the arch before stoppping my your blog previously, now I am fascinated by it. A perfect choice. It's good to see St Louis has such a thriving art scene too.

My thanks for all your kind comments. Here's how this was done. The text is the first two paragraphs of the article on stainless steel in the English version of Wikipedia. I wanted to learn to use the Vanishing Point feature in Photoshop. I cut and pasted the text into new PS files with a blank background. Using Vanishing Point, you can create new planes on your original image (the Arch, here) with perspective set in any way you want. I created two planes to fit two of the Arch's steel plates and dragged the text in. It was automatically reshaped to fit the planes I made and, bingo, the text was in perspective, looking like it was painted on the monument itself. Photoshop can get way more complex but this is about as far as I can take it.

For some reason, I always thought the arch was made of marble. Didn't realize it was stainless steel.

After thinking about it, of course it's not marble. Marble will not be able to support that kind of weight. Duh!

I love this photo with the blue and goldish reflections. And adding the text -- well you fooled me!

That arch is amazing - no matter how many pictures you take, all are fabulous and no two are the same. Stunning.
